About Us

Our Vision: An empowered community where all live a life of health, hope, and opportunity

Tipton Prevents is all about prevention. Our goal is to lower substance misuse rates in Tipton County by stopping the problem before it starts. We identify community gaps and collaborate with community members to create solutions. We are proud to say that we have brought in over $3 million in funding, but more importantly, we celebrate the fact that we have seen a drop in substance misuse rates in our youth since Tipton Prevents’ establishment.

Tipton Prevents is a non-profit coalition of individuals, government bodies, and organizations uniting to reduce underage drinking, tobacco use, marijuana use, and prescription drug misuse in Tipton County. We recognize that effective substance misuse prevention requires the participation of all key sector stakeholders in a community working together and utilizing environmental strategies to achieve successful population-level change.

About 10% of 12-year-olds say they have tried alcohol, but by age 15, that number jumps to 50%. Additionally, by the time they are seniors, almost 70% of high school students will have tried alcohol, half will have taken an illegal drug, and more than 20% will have used a prescription drug for a non-medical purpose.

The sooner you talk to your children about alcohol and other drugs, the greater chance you have of influencing their decisions about drinking and substance use.

How has marijuana changed since the 70s, 80s, and 90s??

Until the 90s, marijuana averaged between 2-5% THC. Today, due to cultivation for higher and higher levels of THC and lower amounts of CBD, it’s nearly impossible to find marijuana flower in a dispensary lower than 10%, and many near 30%. (THC is considered high potency for anything over 15% THC.) Concentrates weren’t commercialized until after 2010 and range from 60% to 99% potency.

📣 Talk with your teen about the risks of high potency marijuana use! Make sure to check out johnnysambassadors.org for more info on the harms of THC on adolescent brains.
We love our sister coalition!

Tipton Prevents is honored to be mentoring Drug Free Fayette. Director Kayla Dillon is doing AMAZING work with our neighboring coalition! We’re excited to donate books to kickstart their very own Mental Health Library as well as provide THC and alcohol simulation goggles, along with activities, to educate and raise awareness at events across Fayette County.

Go give @drugfreefayettetn a follow and check out all of the awesome things happening over there. We’re stronger when we work together! #UnitingForChange

Opioid overdoses can happen in an instant, but Narcan gives us a chance to act and save a life!

Narcan (Naloxone) is a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose and prevent overdose death. Tipton Prevents is fortunate to be part of the TN Save A Life initiative which allows us to connect individuals and organizations with this life saving drug-free of cost. Not only are our police officers and first responders able to be equipped with Narcan, but it is also available to individuals and family members by request.

You can contact Madelynn Ross, our Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist, for more info, training opportunities, and how to get a free overdose prevention kit.
