About Us

Our Vision: A healthy and safe community free of substance misuse

Tipton Prevents is all about prevention. Our goal is to lower substance misuse rates in Tipton County by stopping the problem before it starts. We identify community gaps and collaborate with community members to create solutions. We are proud to say that we have brought in over $3 million in funding, but more importantly, we celebrate the fact that we have seen a drop in substance misuse rates in our youth since Tipton Prevents’ establishment.

Tipton Prevents is a non-profit coalition of individuals, government bodies, and organizations uniting to reduce underage drinking, tobacco use, marijuana use, and prescription drug misuse in Tipton County. We recognize that effective substance misuse prevention requires the participation of all key sector stakeholders in a community working together and utilizing environmental strategies to achieve successful population-level change.

Narcan (Naloxone) is a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose and prevent overdose death. Drug Free Tipton is fortunate to be part of the TN Save A Life initiative which allows us to connect individuals and organizations with this life saving drug- free of cost. Not only are our police officers and first responders able to be equipped with Narcan, but it is also available to individuals and family members by request.

You can contact Madelynn Ross, our Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist, for more info, training opportunities, and how to get a free overdose prevention kit.

“Although the Swedish product was introduced in 2014, nicotine pouches have more recently gained popularity, particularly among the youth. According to a CDC study, nicotine pouches were the second-most popular form of tobacco children admitted to using. And medical experts say the highly addictive products can have negative health impacts, especially on young people.”

Because fentanyl is so strong, people who make illicit (illegal) drugs use fentanyl to make their drugs cheaper and more powerful. They do not have the special equipment that spread out the chemicals evenly. Each pill or powder is not the same. It does not take a lot of fentanyl to cause an overdose, especially for someone who does not usually use opioids.

"Kids don't always have the facts when it comes to alcohol and other drugs. If parents don't talk about the risks of underage drinking and substance use, their kids might not see any harm in trying alcohol and other substances. Having a conversation allows parents to set clear rules about what they expect from their kids when it comes to alcohol and other drugs."
